The Sound Mind Protocol

The Sound mind protocol.

Feel calm, confident, and at home in your body again.

Establish stable nervous system that does not get triggered by every difficult situation, conversation, or intrusive thought.

With a balanced mind and body we are no longer controlled by how we feel, but can control how we respond to feelings.

We can have a profound impact on the nervous system by tapping into what acupuncturists call the 8 extraordinary meridians. These are deep lines of connection in the body, formed in the womb that set our energetic blue print . They directly affect how the mind experiences life through the sensations and reactions of the body. These channels can be disrupted through various internal and extrenal stressors; Think chronic over stimulation, difficult formational relationships, and traumatic experiences. Through opening and balancing these channels we can make great strides in balancing the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems, enhancing our capacity for emotional regulation, balancing sex drive, augmenting hormonal health, and resolving damage to the body from early life experiences.

In the Sound mind protocol we Stimulate these meridian lines of the body using gentle Electroacupuncture. Electroacupuncture (EA) has been studied in various animal models for its potential effects on the dopamine system, including dopamine levels, metabolism, and receptors. Research primarily focuses on conditions like neuropathic pain, anxiety, sleep disturbances, Parkinson's disease, and inflammation. Key effects include modulation of dopamine receptor expression (particularly D1 and D2 subtypes), increased dopamine availability or turnover, neuroprotection of dopaminergic neurons, and downstream benefits like reduced pain, anxiety, inflammation, and improved motor function or sleep. These effects often involve brain regions such as the amygdala, hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, striatum, and substantia nigra.

Electroacupuncture (EA) has a well-documented, robust effect on the central and peripheral serotonin (5-HT) system. Research across animal models and human studies shows that EA consistently increases serotonin turnover, modulates serotonin receptor expression, and activates serotonergic pathways in multiple brain regions. Below is a summary of the main researched effects:

1. Increases Serotonin Release and Turnover

EA markedly increases extracellular 5-HT and its metabolite 5-HIAA in many brain regions:

– Nucleus accumbens, striatum, hippocampus, hypothalamus, prefrontal cortex, raphe nuclei, spinal cord dorsal horn.

2. Activates Serotonergic Neurons in the Raphe Nuclei

EA stimulates neurons in the nucleus raphe magnus (NRM) and nucleus raphe dorsalis (DRN), the main sources of brain and spinal cord serotonin.

c-Fos expression (marker of neuronal activation) is significantly increased in 5-HT-immunoreactive neurons in NRM and DRN after EA.

3. Modulates Serotonin Receptors making them more sensitive to serotonin.

4. Human Evidence

  • Clinical fMRI studies show EA activates raphe nuclei and increases serotonin transporter availability (measured by PET).

  • Patients with major depression treated with EA show increased plasma 5-HT and reduced depressive symptoms correlating with 5-HT changes.

  • EA for postoperative nausea/vomiting (PONV) is as effective as ondansetron (a 5-HT3 antagonist), supporting clinical involvement of serotonin.
